My VG Music Picks #1 – Opening (Super Smash Bros. for Wii U)

(originally posted November 28th 2014)

For reasons that I won’t explain since you probably don’t care, I’m beginning to not have as much time to write articles. But since I don’t want to break the streak of doing them weekly, I figured I’d start a recurring series of articles that are short and simple to write up; specifically, articles about some of my favourite pieces of music in video gaming. And what better way to start this off than with a track from a game released in Europe today: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

When it comes to fighting game music, you need to have something exciting; something that can get the heart pumping and fill everyone involved with a burning desire to be the winner, and the opening theme to the newest Smash Bros achieves just that.

While it may lack the grandeur and ‘epicness’ of Brawl’s main theme (it had a Latin choir for crying out loud) it sort of reflects Masahiro Sakurai’s own feelings towards this new iteration. Brawl was his magnum opus; at the time, he said that he didn’t think he could top it. So, with this music, it’s not a case of something trying to one-up its predecessor. Rather than try to be better, it just tries to be the best it can be, which ironically makes for an arguably superior music track.

Whereas Brawl wowed us, made us sit back and take everything in awe, this game and music just makes us want to beat the crap out something with fiery determination, and for a fighting game, that’s exactly how you should be feeling.
