My VG Music Picks #21 -Stepping Wind (Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil)

When we think of snowy or winter-themed levels of videogames, the music is usually relatively soft or calming; it tends to create a sense of tranquility. That’s why, in retrospect, it’s kind of weird that the first level in the snow-topped mountains of Mira-Mira in Klonoa 2 has this energetic, fast-paced rock song.

I have a lot of nostalgia for this game and I remember, as a kid, this level blowing me away purely because of the music. Aside from being one of the board levels (levels where Klonoa would ride a hoverboard of sorts along a fixed path), which already makes it fun, you’re suddenly smacked in the face by this cheery track – a far cry from the rest of Mira-Mira’s tone. Oh, and it has lyrics.

I don’t know why but I’ve always been a sucker for lyrics in videogame music, even if it’s being sung in a made-up language (trust me, it isn’t Japanese).  Plus, it’s even sung by Klonoa’s voice actress, which adds an extra layer of charm to it.

Some videogame levels are worth playing over and over again just for their music and this track is proof of that.
