My VG Music Picks #26 – Lavender Town (Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow)

Pokémon, at it’s core, is ultimately a thing for kids. When you glance at the advertising, the simple gameplay and the cuddly creatures that populate the many regions, you think to yourself “Yeah, I know some children that would love this.” But every once in a while, something will occur that causes those same wide-eyed innocent kids, with a dream to be the very best like no one ever was, to shit themselves. For many of us aficionados of Pokémon, that very first moment was in the original games.

“Oh look! A new town!” “Can’t wait to see what this place is all about.” “Is there a Gym here?” These are the thoughts that circulated our minds as we entered Lavender Town, blissfully unaware of what was in store. A small town that was an eternal reminder to the fact that Pokémon, the same cuddly creatures that we made fight for our amusement and could be easily fixed up with a quick trip to a Pokémon Centre, could die. There was a tower dedicated to this; filled with the graves of fallen Pokémon. And if this revelation doesn’t cause a small child to fall into a pit of unexplainable emotions, the music certainly would.

People have talked about this music for years and with every right to. It’s just so creepy; an impressive feat considering this was on the original Gameboy. A haunting, spine-chilling melody that perfectly captures the atmosphere a town dedicated to the dead should have and will no doubt be leaving brown stains in our pants for many years to come.
